"Stay close to people who feel like sunlight" - Xan Oku

Posted by Lisa Selwitz on

This is a departure for Lily-Lark. We normally talk about practical things, like places to use a parasol....how to open a parasol...what to wear with a parasol...all very important details to navigate a world fraught with confusion and uncertainty. We’re motivated to provide information, skin protection, and sometimes even a smile.

But today, what’s making me smile is this quote. So I, the owner of Lily-Lark, would like to talk, and for a moment I hope you’ll indulge me sharing my thoughts with you.

Stay close to people who feel like sunlight. This idea makes me feel full. And happy, on a day when I otherwise feel sad. I learned that someone very close to me just found out she has breast cancer. Most of the women I know who have fought this disease have survived. So tonight I say a prayer.

The person diagnosed is not my flesh and blood. But she’s still my sister. And I love her very much. She is sunlight. More importantly, she comes from sunlight. She grew up in a family shy of resources and abundant with love. This group of people have taken me in, and all of them are my sisters now. From a young age, these women taught me what family really means. And acceptance. And loving unconditionally. I’m not referencing parental love. Or love of a mate. But love of people you choose to make family. And people who you feel this way about, fill you up. And make YOU shine. Like sunlight.

Thank you my sisters.

Stay close to people who feel like sunlight. And bring a sun parasol.
