The 'DON'T LET SUMMER BE A BUMMER' Survival Guide

Posted by Lisa Selwitz on

According to the Farmer’s Almanac, we’re in for a doozy. Like a trashy romance novel, the forecast calls for hot and steamy.

We’ve had a heckova winter, and who’s with us on this - it’s time for a break! But noooo...based on a 200-year-old formula, the Farmer’s Almanac tells us this year will be hotter than usual for most of the nation. So we bring you our guide to surviving the heat of summer. And none too early, as the Northeast will see its first bout of high 80’s this week.

Here's what we recommend doing:

  • Cool your pulse points by holding your wrists under cold water or rubbing ice on them for a few minutes. You can do this with your feet and ankles as well.
  • Place a bowl of ice or frozen water bottle behind a floor fan. That’ll cool the air.
  • Eat ice cream. (Our favorite hack.) But in small amounts. Metabolic heat is needed to break down food so eating smaller portions and smaller meals is better. Whether it’s Rocky Road or Mint Chocolate Chip probably doesn’t matter, but if it did, we would go with Rocky Road.
  • Carry a Lily-Lark sun parasol when outdoors during the day. Its UPF 50+ will protect you from harmful UV rays, but did you know that being underneath a parasol can lower the air temperature by up to 10 degrees? We’re all for sun and UV protection, but most people don’t realize how much more comfortable it is under the canopy. It’s like walking around with a little bit of shade everywhere you go. And with Lily-Lark, you’re doing it in style.

  • Breathing deeply can cool you off. Take in air through your mouth and exhale through your nose. The air coming in is cooled by your saliva before it reaches your lungs.
  • Last, read trashy novels and get your mind off the heat.
